dc.description.abstract This paper examines the experience of the University of the West Indies (UWI) as a regional university and reflects on the future of its transnational character. It traces the evolution of the UWI system and presents a profile of its structure and functioning as well as the organization of its programmes. It analyses the reasons for and the consequences of the systemic restructuring it underwent in 1984. It focuses on some of the key issues confronting UWI as a regional university: the question of access, the contribution to development, and the problem of funding and resources.
