dc.description.abstract This article discusses a study of leather artisans in Tamil Nadu, which accounts for the lion's share of leather-processing in India. It looks at the effects of export-oriented growth, use of chemicals in tanning and the sidelining of the age-old local knowledge, on the survival of small village-based leather-processing units.
