The L absorption spectra of tungsten in the pure metal, in the oxide WO3 and some tungstates RE2(WO4)3 (where RE = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) have been studied employing a 0.4 m Cauchois type bent crystal spectrograph. The tungsten L(I) edge comprises two components, while the L(II) and L(III) edges are accompanied by very strong white lines on their high energy side. In addition, a distinctive fine structure associated with all the three edges has been observed in the case of tungstates only. Our results indicate that the tungsten ion does not participate directly in chemical bonding in these materials, the bonding being between the rare earth and the (WO4)2- ions. |
