dc.description.abstract An antibiotic-producing marine Streptomyces sp. isolated from an intertidal zone of Andaman Island showed a broad range of inhibitory activity against non-marine and marine bacterial cultures. The optimum conditions for growth and production of this antibiotic were studied. Production of the antibiotic appeared to be mediated by two plasmids (3.38 Kb and 7.58 Kb). The antibiotic activity was high at alkaline pH and it was unaffected by variation in sodium chloride concentration. The partially purified antibiotic was found to be stable at 4 degrees C even after 15 days, whereas it was inactivated after 2 days at 37 degrees C. Some of the physiological and biochemical properties of the organism are described.
