dc.description.abstract Plasmonic nanomaterials are promising candidates for numerous applications including chemical and biological sensing, surface-enhanced processes, and nanoscale optoelectronic devices. Their unique optical properties have been exploited in the development of novel applications in biomedical technology. It is always beneficial to add additional functionalities to the existing properties to expand their capabilities and for the observation of interesting physical phenomena. For example, hybrid magnetic-plasmonic nanoparticles have immense potential in cancer detection, drug delivery, and photothermal cell destruction. Apart from being good contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging scanning, these multifunctional nanoparticles can also be used for optical imaging and bioseparation. Plasmonic metal allows for easy conjugation and makes the magnetic nanoparticle more biocompatible. On the other hand, the magnetic particle imparts stability to the composite material. Another example involves combining the optical properties of plasmonic metal and emission of quantum dots. By encapsulating quantum dots with plasmonic metal, it is possible to improve their emission properties, make them less toxic, and facilitates easy functionalization. This chapter will review some of the multifunctional plasmonic nanoparticles and their applications. en_US
