Abstract:
An attempt has been made to explore the role of lipid in the growing bird, Gallus domesticus during post hatching development from the day of hatching to 35th day age. Various tissues viz., liver, pectoral muscle, large intestine and total blood showed a distinct tissue specific pattern in the lipid profiles in terms of total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and phospholipid from the 1st to the 35th day of post hatching developmental period. An increase in the relative concentration of arachidonic acid in liver, muscle, intestine and blood and linoleic acid (except in muscle) at the cost of oleic acid (except in intestine) was noticed during the post hatching development of chicks. Although the activity of HMG CoA reductase in liver increases from the 7th day of post hatching development till the 35th day of age, the activity of the same enzyme in serum remain constant during the same period. Changes in the lipid metabolism during the post hatching development of the bird are discussed.
