dc.description.abstract The present paper offers a fresh look into the current practice of passenger transportation from multiple perspectives, both old and evolving. It asks whether we should extrapolate past practices into the future. It concludes that we must find a new balance between equity and economic considerations in the provision of public transportation rather than leaving market forces to prevail. It discusses a number of alternative state transport policies, with special attention given to the issues of the developing and third world. en_US
