Abstract:
The electrochemical performance of a number of doped MnO2 samples was evaluated in the following electrolytes: (i) Leclanche; (ii) 25 percent ZnCl2, and (iii) 25 percent ZnCl2 with additives i.e., 2 percent LiCl and 1 percent NH2SO3H. Some of the molybdenum-doped MnO2 samples perform well as cathode materials. The discharge duration appears to be better than that of the International Common Sample I.C-8 (chemical MnO2) which was used as reference sample. Distinct improvement in the discharge duration is observed when both the additives are added simultaneously. Attempts were made to correlate the electrochemical reactivity of MnO2 and the presence of cation vacancies, but no clear-cut conclusions could be drawn. The internal correlation of Ruetschi's parameters was satisfactory.
