Abstract:
The present study was undertaken to elucidate the comparative essential oil profile of various plant organs of Annona muricata L. (Soursop) using TLC and HPTLC methods. Toluene: Ethyl acetate (9.3:0.7 v/v) was employed as a mobile phase for fingerprint analysis and essential oils were detected as blue, purple, or brownish spots after spraying with the vanillin-sulphuric acid reagent. A comprehensive assortment of essential oil phytoconstituents in different plant parts revealed the presence of 9 different essential oils with Rf values ranging in 0.04 to 0.70 using HPTLC method. Among the 9 essential oils derivatives; 3 were uniquely found in seeds, and essential oil with Rf value 0.17 was commonly observed in rind, seed, leaf, and bark extracts of A. muricata. These findings form referential data for the identification and standardization of plant material for pharmaceutical applications and also provide essential oil chromatographic profiles of A. muricata plant organs with the selected solvent system.
